Here's a straightforward download for you - get the CMI8738/C3DX driver for Windows XP here.
You will get the Windows XP audio driver and Mixer control panel for C-Media 8738 Sound cards and built-in sound chips. The driver version is 5.12.01.0644. It will install onto your system and enable the configuration of the 8738 card/chip to assign speakers, disable the MIDI game port, assign the phone jacks and more. For more info, please take a look at the readme file included in this C-Media 8738 download package.
