Brother MFC-L8690CDW Drivers, Rear Paper Jam & Duplex Issues
This page exists because MFC-L8690CDW failures often get misread as “Windows/driver problems” even when printing works and only one function breaks (usually Scan to PC or duplex). The threads below show a recurring pattern: the device can scan from the PC just fine, but won’t scan from the panel to the PC; or duplex looks like it’s working until the second side, then the printer declares a rear jam. These notes capture what was actually confirmed in the field and what resolved it.
Problem: “Scan to PC” doesn’t work from the printer panel (Windows 11 / LAN)
What users observed: After installing the full driver package, printing worked and scanning from the PC worked, but initiating a scan from the printer’s control panel to the PC failed. The printer stayed “waiting/connecting to PC” and never started scanning.
What was tried: Full package installation, USB installation as a test, removing/reinstalling Brother utilities, and repeated reconfiguration of scan settings.
Where this ended: A firmware update from Brother resolved panel-initiated Scan to PC failures for a user who had the issue across both Windows 11 and Windows 10. They reported it was fixed after updating to new firmware.
Problem: CC4 launches “in background” but the GUI won’t open
What users observed: ControlCenter4 appeared in Task Manager, but the window would not display after a USB install attempt and subsequent reconfiguration.
What was tried: Removing CC4 via the Brother Utility removal path (not a standalone uninstaller), rebooting, and cleaning out imaging device entries in Device Manager during uninstall attempts.
Where this ended: CC4 was treated as the component to avoid during reinstall; iPrint&Scan was used instead.
Problem: Rear jam on every print
What users observed: The printer began jamming on virtually every job at the rear. Cleaning the grey rollers did nothing. Paper traveled most of the way through, then jammed right before exit. The device reported a jam code consistent with duplex, even when printing single-sided and even when printing internal test pages.
What was found during troubleshooting: Attention shifted away from the input rollers because the sheet made it nearly all the way through. The “exit/output bin rollers” were identified as the area to check. In the documented case, the output rollers were not spinning during feed, and turning a large gear did not drive the exit rollers.
Where this ended: The fault was isolated to the exit/duplex/drive path (suspected broken gear or a stuck guide/gate), but no confirmed mechanical repair was posted. The owner ultimately resolved the situation through replacement (consumer rights claim) after warranty support was denied.
