Canon imageCLASS MF236n Driver, Scanner Not Communicating, Windows 11 Install Problems, ADF Feed Issues, and Paper Jams

A Canon imageCLASS MF236n driver problem often shows up as a split device: printing may still work while scanning fails, or Windows may install one part of the device while the scanner side remains missing.

Users reported Cannot communicate with the scanner, MF Scan Utility failures after Windows 11, driver install trouble, printer detected but not printing, feeder pages pulling two sheets at once, and paper jam states inside the machine.

Problem: Canon MF236n will not scan to PC

What users observed:Canon MF236n user could not scan to the computer. When scanning was attempted, the message said Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated. The user said the USB cable was connected and the printer/scanner was on.

What was tried: Users tested scanning from the computer, checked whether the scan could be started through MF Scan Utility, restarted the printer and computer, and looked at whether the machine was selected in the network scanner selector when the device was on the network.

How this played out: The recorded fix was to remove MF Scan Utility and the MF230 Series software, restart, reinstall the driver and MF Scan Utility with the USB cable disconnected, restart again, reconnect the printer, and test scanning.

Problem: Canon MF236n prints but scanning returns Cannot communicate with the scanner

What users observed: Canon MF-series users reported that the printer side still worked while MF Scan Utility returned Cannot communicate with the scanner. In one Windows 11 case, scanner selector software could see the device and MF Scan Utility could see it, but scanning still failed on two computers while other computers on the same network worked.

What was tried: Users checked scanner selector software, installed MF Scan Utility, compared the failing Windows 11 computers with the working computers, and tested whether the scan utility could see the scanner before sending the scan job.

How this played out: No definite solution was documented in that case. The known result was that visibility in the selector and MF Scan Utility did not prove that scan communication would complete.

Problem: Canon MF Scan Utility fails after Windows 11 24H2

What users observed: Users reported that after Windows 11 24H2, MF Scan Utility opened but scanning failed with Cannot communicate with the scanner. One user had reinstalled Windows 11 Home, reinstalled drivers, reset the printer, reset the modem, and still could not scan with MF Scan Utility.

What was tried: Users installed updates, reinstalled drivers, reset the printer, reset network equipment, checked whether MF Scan Utility could start, and compared the new Windows 11 installation with the previous working Windows 11 installation.

How this played out: No single final repair was documented for every 24H2 case. In one related 24H2 case, Windows Scan worked while MF Scan Utility still failed, which showed that the scanner was not always completely unavailable to Windows.

Problem: Canon MF236n scanner driver does not install cleanly through USB

What users observed: Canon driver installation can fail or remain incomplete on Windows 11 or Windows 10 when a Generic Plus driver is installed through USB. In that state, Windows may have a device entry but not the right working driver path for the device.

What was tried: Users worked through the printer entry in Windows, selected the driver manually, used Have Disk, and pointed Windows to the driver INF file. The failure stayed with USB scanner not detected, scanner driver is missing, and printer detected but not working behavior.

How this played out: The recorded Windows path was to update or reinstall the driver manually by selecting the driver INF file. The issue was not a paper jam, toner not detected, or print quality problem.

Problem: Canon MF236n printer suddenly stops printing on macOS even with the latest driver

What users observed:Canon imageCLASS MF236n user reported that the printer suddenly stopped printing on a 2019 iMac. The user updated the printer driver to version 10.11.11 without success, then updated macOS from Ventura to Sonoma. Printing worked briefly from the iMac and a MacBook Air through Bonjour, but the printer still returned to not printing. The printer showed lit Processing/Data indicators, while the print queue showed no spooled jobs.

What was tried: Users updated the Canon driver, updated macOS, tested printing from more than one Apple computer, checked Bonjour printing, and checked whether jobs were stuck in the print queue.

How this played out: No definite solution was documented. The known outcome was that updating the driver and updating macOS did not produce a lasting print fix. The case remained a printer installed but not printing and print queue mismatch, not a confirmed paper or toner fault.

Problem: Canon MF236n ADF pulls two or more pages at once

What users observed: A Canon imageCLASS MF236n user reported that when a set of documents was placed in the feeder tray for scanning, the feeder sometimes pulled two or more sheets at a time. The sheets behind the first page did not get scanned, so the user had to rescan the missed pages.

What was tried: Users manually held back extra documents while one sheet scanned. The accepted answer focused on the ADF rollers, dirty or worn roller surfaces, paper edges sticking together, unfolded or deeply creased documents, and possible alignment problems after forceful jam removal.

How this played out: The accepted outcome tied the issue to ADF feed behavior rather than the scanner driver. The recorded fix path was cleaning the ADF rollers lightly, separating or fanning sheets before loading, avoiding stuck-together creased pages, and treating forceful jam removal as a possible cause of later misfeeds.

Problem: Canon MF236n document jam appears in the feeder

What users observed: Canon MF236n document jams can appear in the feeder. The machine displays a paper-jam message, and the feeder path has to be cleared before scanning or copying can continue.

What was tried: Users removed documents from the feeder, opened the feeder cover, gently pulled out the jammed document, and closed the feeder cover.

How this played out: The recorded path for MF247dw/MF236n document jams was to open the feeder cover and gently remove the jammed document. The issue stayed with paper jam and ADF feed behavior rather than the Canon MF236n driver.

Problem: Canon MF236n paper tears during jam removal

What users observed: Canon MF236n jam records warn that if paper tears during removal, fragments left inside the machine can cause repeated jams.

What was tried: Users checked for torn paper fragments and removed remaining pieces from the paper path.

How this played out: The recorded outcome was that all paper fragments had to be removed to prevent the jam state from returning. This was a physical jam path, not a driver unavailable or Windows 11 printer path.

Problem: Canon MF236n toner cover will not close after a jam

What users observed: After clearing a jam inside the MF236n, the toner cover may not close if the toner cartridge is not seated correctly.

What was tried: Users reinstalled the toner cartridge and aligned the right and left projections with the cartridge guides before pushing it securely into place.

How this played out: The recorded outcome was that the toner cartridge seating had to be corrected before the toner cover could close. This was not a toner not detected case unless the cartridge recognition state also failed.

Problem: Canon MF236n cannot scan because MF Scan Utility is installed but the scanner is not selected

What users observed: In the MF236n scan-to-PC case, the scan path included checking whether the scanner was selected in the network scanner selector. If the machine was not selected there, scan attempts from the computer or panel could fail even when the printer was present on the network.

What was tried: Users opened the scanner selector from the system tray, selected the checkbox for the machine, and confirmed the selection.

How this played out: The recorded path identified scanner selection as part of the scan-to-PC setup. The user did not return with a final confirmation that this solved the problem, so the case does not have a definite user-confirmed ending.

Problem: Canon MF236n scan button fails

What users observed: In the MF236n scan-to-PC exchange, the scan path was split between scanning from the computer and starting a scan from the control panel. The user’s later error still appeared while attempting the scanning step, even though the USB cable was connected and the machine was powered on.

What was tried: Users tested scanning from the computer first, then were told to restart the printer and computer before trying the control-panel scan again.

How this played out: No definite solution was documented. The final visible state was still Cannot communicate with the scanner, followed by the driver and MF Scan Utility reinstall path.

Problem: Canon MF236n scanner path works differently from the printer path

What users observed: Canon MF-series users repeatedly described the printer and scanner as behaving differently. The printer could be installed or visible, while the scanner side returned Cannot communicate with the scanner or stayed missing from the scan utility.

What was tried: Users checked the printer entry, scanner selector, MF Scan Utility, USB connection, network state, and driver installation.

How this played out: The known result was that the print path and scan path can separate. A working printer entry did not prove a working scanner driver. This is the same resolver pattern seen with Canon imageCLASS MF232w, Canon MF240 scanner driver, and MFP prints but does not scan.
